Botox Is a Brand Name, Not a Treatment
This causes more confusion than anything else in the category, so it is worth being precise. Botulinum toxin is the treatment. BOTOX is the registered trademark of one particular manufacturer’s version of it. Several other licensed products exist, each with its own name, and they are not interchangeable in dosing even though they do the same job.
Consequently, a clinic advertising “Botox” while injecting a different product is being loose with the truth, and you are entitled to ask which product will be used and to see the vial. We use and will tell you which before you consent. Throughout this site we use “Botox” where patients search for it and “botulinum toxin” where clinical precision matters.
How Units Work — and Why Prices Vary So Much
Botulinum toxin is dosed in units, and the number you need depends on your own muscle strength rather than a fixed menu. A patient with strong forehead muscles may need twice what another needs for the same visible result. That single fact explains most of the price variation in this city.

So the two questions to ask anywhere are: which product, and how many units. A price well below the market usually reflects fewer units, a heavily diluted preparation, or a product that is not what you assumed. Cheap toxin is rarely a bargain; it is usually less toxin.
Counterfeit and Unregistered Product: The Real Risk
Botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine, and counterfeit or unregistered vials circulate in markets where demand is high. This is not a theoretical concern — serious harm, including botulism-type illness requiring hospital treatment, has been reported internationally following injection of counterfeit product, and it is one of the few genuine dangers in aesthetic medicine.
Protecting yourself is straightforward. Ask whether the premises and the injector are DHA-licensed. Ask which product is being used and to see the sealed vial before it is drawn up. Be sceptical of treatment offered in homes, hotel rooms, salons or at “parties”, and of prices far below the market. A legitimate clinic will answer all of this without hesitation; reluctance is your answer.

A word on regulatory status, since it is rarely mentioned: certain upper-face cosmetic areas and axillary hyperhidrosis are approved indications, while several other uses — including masseter and most lower-face points — are widely practised off-label. That is normal in aesthetic medicine, but you should be told which is which as part of consent. We do.
What It Does Not Do
Three limits account for most disappointment across the whole category.
- No volume. Hollow temples, flat cheeks and under-eye hollowing need filler. Relaxing muscles does nothing for lost volume.
- No lifting. Jowls and genuine sagging need tightening treatments or surgery. A millimetre or two of brow adjustment is not a face lift.
- No skin quality change. Texture, pores, pigmentation and dullness are untouched. Those need resurfacing, needling or medical treatment.
Additionally, lines already etched into the skin at rest respond only partially, softening rather than disappearing.
Onset, Duration and Aftercare
Nothing happens immediately. Onset is typically three to seven days, the effect settles fully at around two weeks, and duration is usually three to four months for facial areas — longer for masseter and hyperhidrosis. Heavy exercise tends to shorten duration.
Afterwards, stay upright for four hours and avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for 24 hours. Skip the gym, sauna, steam room and facials for a day, and avoid heat treatments for a few days. Small bumps and mild redness at injection points settle within an hour or two, minor bruising is possible, and a mild headache in the first day or two is not unusual.
How to Choose an Injector
- Ask who is injecting — the individual, their qualification and their experience with the specific area you want treated.
- Check the licence — both the practitioner and the facility should be DHA-licensed. You may ask.
- Expect an assessment — anyone willing to inject without watching your face move and taking a history is skipping the part that matters.
- Ask about the review — a two-week follow-up is where results are refined. Clinics that do not offer one are not planning to adjust anything.
- Ask about complications — a competent clinic can explain what could go wrong, how it would be managed, and who to contact after hours.
- Notice the pressure — time-limited offers and packages sold before an assessment serve the clinic, not you.
Who Should Not Have It
Treatment is avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in the presence of infection at the injection site, where there is known allergy to any component including albumin, and in neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis and Lambert-Eaton syndrome.
Tell us also about aminoglycoside antibiotics and other medicines affecting neuromuscular transmission, anticoagulant therapy, any previous reaction to botulinum toxin, and any planned dental or surgical work. A full medication and supplement history is taken at assessment, since several common supplements increase bruising.
Risks
In trained hands botulinum toxin has a long safety record, but it is a prescription medicine and not risk-free. Common effects are bruising, injection-point bumps and headache. Less commonly, temporary brow heaviness, eyelid drooping or asymmetry occur; all resolve as the effect wears off, though that can take weeks. Is Botox safe?
Botulinum toxin has a long safety record when a genuine, registered product is administered by a trained practitioner in a licensed clinic. The real risks in this market come from counterfeit or unregistered product and from treatment in unlicensed settings, not from the treatment itself.
Why is Botox so much cheaper at some clinics?
Usually because you are receiving fewer units, a heavily diluted preparation, or a different product than advertised. Occasionally because the product should not be in use at all. Ask which product and how many units, and compare on that basis.
Is all Botox the same?
No. BOTOX is one manufacturer’s trademarked product; several other licensed botulinum toxins exist and their dosing is not interchangeable. A clinic should tell you which they use and show you the sealed vial.
How can I tell the product is genuine?
Ask to see the sealed vial before it is drawn up, ask whether the product is registered for use in the UAE, and check the practitioner and premises are DHA-licensed. Avoid treatment in homes, hotels, salons or at social events, and treat unusually low prices as a warning.
How many units will I need?
It depends on your muscle strength, not on a standard menu. Stronger muscles need more for the same result. We assess and tell you the number before treating.
How long does it take to work and how long does it last?
Onset is three to seven days with the full effect by around two weeks. Facial areas typically last three to four months; masseter and hyperhidrosis treatment lasts longer. Heavy exercise shortens duration.
Will I look frozen?
Not if it is dosed conservatively and reviewed. Frozen results come from maximum doses applied to every area at once. Starting lower and adjusting at two weeks is the safer approach, since adding is easy and reversing is not.
Does it hurt?
Very little. The needle is extremely fine and treatment takes about 10 to 15 minutes for the upper face. Anaesthetic is not usually required.
Can Botox lift my face?
Only a subtle brow adjustment of a millimetre or two by balancing opposing muscles. Genuine sagging needs tightening treatments or surgery, and no amount of toxin addresses it.
Is it approved for all the areas clinics offer?
No. Certain upper-face cosmetic areas and underarm sweating are approved indications; masseter treatment and most lower-face points are widely used off-label. That is normal practice, but you should be told which applies to your treatment as part of consent.
Do you offer a review appointment?
