Microneedling in Dubai is one of the few aesthetic treatments with genuine clinical evidence behind it for acne scarring, which is why it has stayed in use while a good many fashionable alternatives have come and gone. The principle is simple enough: fine needles create thousands of controlled micro-injuries, and the skin rebuilds itself with new collagen as it heals. At Dermabloom Medical Center in Mirdif, Dr Sarah Magdy assesses your skin, sets a realistic timeline and tells you what the treatment can and cannot achieve for your particular concern. How Microneedling Works
An automated microneedling pen holds fine, sterile needles that move vertically at high speed. As the device passes across the skin, it creates a dense field of micro-channels at a chosen depth. The skin then responds as it does to any minor injury, by producing collagen and elastin during repair. Clinicians call this collagen induction therapy, and the term is more accurate than “microneedling” because the needling itself is only the trigger.
Depth is the key variable. Shallow settings suit general skin quality and fine lines, whereas deeper settings are needed for established acne scarring. Because an automated pen inserts needles vertically rather than dragging them sideways, it is both more precise and considerably gentler on the surrounding skin than older rolling devices.
What the Evidence Actually Supports
| Concern | Evidence position | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Atrophic acne scars | Strongest indication | Meaningful improvement in rolling and boxcar scars over a course |
| Skin texture and pores | Good | Smoother surface, pores appear refined |
| Fine lines | Moderate | Softening of early lines, not of deep folds |
| Stretch marks | Moderate | Gradual improvement; requires patience |
| Hair thinning | Adjunctive | Some evidence alongside medical treatment, not instead of it |
| Melasma | Contested | Approached with real caution — see below |
A note on melasma, since patients ask: microneedling for melasma is genuinely debated, and inflammation can aggravate pigmentation rather than settle it. We would not treat active melasma with needling as a first approach, and we will explain the alternatives if that is your concern.
Being Realistic About Acne Scars
Acne scarring is the main reason patients come to us for microneedling, so it deserves a plain answer. Microneedling improves the appearance of scarring; it does not erase it. Typically we plan three to six sessions about four weeks apart, and collagen continues remodelling for months afterwards.
Scar type matters enormously, though. Rolling and boxcar scars respond best. Deep ice-pick scars respond poorly to needling alone, because their narrow, vertical geometry is not what this treatment addresses well, and they usually need a different or combined approach. Additionally, active acne must be medically controlled first — treating scars while new lesions are still forming means you will simply be back for more scarring later. Therefore we often start with a dermatology consultation and treat the acne before touching the scars.
Pen, Roller or RF: What the Differences Mean
| Automated pen | Home derma roller | RF microneedling | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Needle motion | Vertical, motorised | Dragged across skin | Vertical, with heat |
| Depth control | Precise and adjustable | Fixed and shallow | Precise, plus energy control |
| Sterility | Single-use sterile tips | Reused, hard to sterilise | Single-use sterile tips |
| Addresses laxity | Minimally | No | Yes, modestly |
| Setting | Licensed clinic | Home | Licensed clinic |
If skin laxity is part of your concern alongside texture, RF microneedling adds controlled dermal heating and may suit you better. For scarring and texture without laxity, standard microneedling is usually the sensible and less expensive choice.
Please Reconsider the Home Derma Roller
Home rollers are sold everywhere and they cause a steady stream of avoidable problems, so this warning is worth the space. Rollers drag needles laterally through the skin rather than inserting them vertically, which tears rather than punctures. Furthermore, a device reused at home cannot be properly sterilised, and infection is the predictable result. Rolling over active acne spreads bacteria into surrounding skin, and rolling over a cold sore can spread that too.
Meanwhile, the depths that actually improve scarring are not achievable safely at home, so the devices that feel like they are doing something are usually the ones causing damage. We have treated patients whose scarring was worse after months of home rolling than before they started. If you have been using one, stop and come in for an assessment rather than continuing.
Where Microneedling Fits Alongside Other Treatments
Microneedling frequently forms the backbone of a plan rather than the whole of it. Its micro-channels also allow topical preparations to reach the skin during treatment, which is why combinations are common. Our combination protocols are set out separately: microneedling with salmon DNA for skin quality alongside structural work, and microneedling with exosomes where a smoother recovery is the goal.
That said, combinations are not automatically better. If your concern is texture and scarring alone, the needling is the component doing the work, and additional products add cost rather than results. We will tell you when the plain treatment is the right one, which is more often than the market implies.
What Happens During Treatment
- Assessment — your concerns, skin type, medical history, medications, scarring tendency and previous treatments are reviewed.
- Numbing — topical anaesthetic is applied and left for around 30 minutes.
- Preparation — the skin is cleansed and disinfected, and depth is selected by zone.
- Treatment — the pen is passed systematically across the area, with depth varied over the forehead, cheeks, nose and jawline.
- Post-treatment — a calming serum and, where appropriate, LED therapy.
- Finish — SPF applied and written aftercare given.
Allow roughly 60 to 75 minutes in total, including numbing time.
Downtime and Aftercare
Expect redness resembling moderate sunburn for 24 to 48 hours, with some tightness and mild swelling. Light flaking often follows over the next few days. Most patients are comfortable in public by day two.
Aftercare is strict for good reason, since the skin barrier is temporarily open. Leave makeup off for 24 hours. In addition, avoid the gym, sauna, steam room and swimming for 48 hours, because sweat and chlorine on fresh micro-channels risk irritation and infection. Pause retinoids, acids and vitamin C for about five days. Above all, use sunscreen daily without exception, as treated skin pigments readily in Dubai’s UV conditions and neglecting it is the most common avoidable complication.
Skin Tone Considerations
Microneedling is generally a safer option for medium and darker skin tones than ablative laser resurfacing, because it does not remove the epidermis. This is one reason it is so widely used in this region. Nevertheless, post-inflammatory pigmentation remains a real possibility, so we work with conservative depths, space sessions appropriately and insist on diligent sun protection between them.
Who Should Not Have It
Treatment is avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and on skin with an active infection or inflammatory acne flare in the area to be treated. Furthermore, the following require discussion beforehand: keloid or hypertrophic scarring tendency, bleeding disorders and anticoagulant therapy, immunosuppression, active autoimmune disease, poorly controlled diabetes, a history of cold sores in the treatment area, and recent systemic isotretinoin. Please give a full medication and supplement history at assessment.
Choosing Where to Have It
Microneedling is widely offered in Dubai, including in settings that are not licensed medical clinics, so a few checks are reasonable. Ask whether the premises and the practitioner are DHA-licensed. Confirm that a fresh, single-use sterile tip is opened for your treatment. Ask who is performing it and what depth they intend to use for your concern. Finally, be wary of prices well below the market, since single-use consumables and proper sterility have a genuine cost.
Cost
Pricing depends on the area treated and the number of sessions in your course. Because microneedling is a course treatment, ask about the total rather than a single session. We confirm everything at consultation before booking. Call 04 268 8226 for current fees. As a cosmetic treatment, it is not covered by insurance, although the underlying acne may be.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is microneedling painful?
Topical anaesthetic is applied for about 30 minutes beforehand, so most patients tolerate it comfortably. You will feel vibration and a scratching sensation, most noticeably over bony areas such as the forehead and jawline. Deeper settings for scarring are less comfortable than shallow ones.
How many sessions will I need?
Three to six sessions spaced roughly four weeks apart is typical, with scarring generally needing the fuller course. Your plan is confirmed after assessment rather than sold as a package beforehand.
When will I see results?
Skin often looks brighter within a week or two, but the real change is gradual. Because collagen remodels over months, improvement continues for up to six months after a completed course. Judge the outcome at four to six months.
Will it remove my acne scars completely?
No, and any clinic promising that is overselling. It improves the appearance of scarring, often substantially for rolling and boxcar scars. Deep ice-pick scars respond poorly to needling alone and need a different approach.
Are home derma rollers a cheaper alternative?
They are not a comparable treatment. Rollers drag needles laterally rather than inserting them vertically, cannot be properly sterilised between uses, and cannot safely reach the depths that improve scarring. Infection and worsened scarring are common outcomes. Please stop using one and have your skin assessed.
Is microneedling safe for brown and darker skin tones?
Generally yes, and it is often preferred over ablative laser because the epidermis is not removed. Post-inflammatory pigmentation remains possible though, so we use conservative depths and require strict daily sun protection.
Can I have it if I have active acne?
Not in the affected area. Needling over active inflammatory acne can spread bacteria and worsen inflammation. We treat the acne medically first, then address the scarring once the skin has settled.
Does it help melasma?
The evidence is contested, and inflammation can aggravate pigmentation. We would not use needling as a first-line approach for active melasma, and we will discuss more suitable options if that is your concern.
How does it compare with RF microneedling?
RF microneedling adds heat delivered into the dermis, which allows it to address mild laxity as well as texture and scarring. If laxity is not a concern for you, standard microneedling usually does the job for less money and less downtime.
Do I need to add exosomes, salmon DNA or a serum?
Not necessarily. The needling is the component with the evidence behind it for scarring and texture. Additions may support recovery or skin quality, but they are optional, and for many patients extra sessions represent better value than extra products.
Can microneedling be done on the body?
Yes, for stretch marks and some body scarring, though body skin responds more slowly than facial skin and patience is required. We will confirm suitability at assessment.
What are your opening hours?
We are open from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Please book ahead on 04 268 8226, since appointments include numbing time.
This page provides general information only and is not medical advice or a diagnosis. Suitability and treatment depth are determined at an in-clinic assessment. Microneedling carries risks including prolonged redness, swelling, bruising, infection, cold sore reactivation, pigment change and, rarely, scarring. Results vary between individuals and no outcome can be guaranteed. Microneedling is not performed over active inflammatory acne, active infection, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
