How Cryotherapy Works

Liquid nitrogen sits at approximately minus 196°C. Applied to the skin with a fine spray or a cotton-tipped applicator, it freezes the target tissue, and ice crystal formation inside the cells destroys them. The area then thaws, and the treated tissue is shed over the following one to three weeks as the skin heals underneath. Treatment is usually delivered as one or more short freeze-thaw cycles, with the duration matched to the lesion type, its thickness and its location. The technique is deliberately controlled — the aim is enough freezing to clear the lesion and no more, since excess freezing is what causes lasting pigment change and scarring.

Lesions Commonly Treated With Cryotherapy

• Viral warts and verrucae — on hands, feet and body. These typically need several sessions spaced two to four weeks apart.
• Skin tags — small soft growths, often where skin rubs against skin or clothing.
• Seborrhoeic keratoses — rough, warty, benign growths that become more common with age.
• Actinic keratoses — scaly patches caused by cumulative sun exposure, which need treating because they are pre-cancerous.
• Molluscum contagiosum — small dome-shaped viral lesions, common in children.
• Some solar lentigines — sun-induced flat brown spots, treated with caution and only in carefully selected cases.

When Cryotherapy Is Not the Right Choice

This section matters more than the list above. Freezing destroys tissue, which means nothing is left to send to a laboratory. Any lesion that could be suspicious — a mole or pigmented spot that is changing in size, shape or colour, or a growth that bleeds, crusts or fails to heal — should therefore not be frozen. It needs to be assessed and, if removed, removed by a method that preserves the tissue for histopathology. Cryotherapy is also generally avoided or approached with particular caution where there is a history of cold urticaria, Raynaud’s phenomenon, cryoglobulinaemia or significantly impaired circulation, and over sites where nerves run close to the surface, such as the sides of the fingers. An Honest Note on Skin Tone and Pigmentation

Freezing damages melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment, along with the target tissue. On medium and darker skin tones this creates a real risk of a pale patch at the treated site, which may take many months to recover and can occasionally be permanent. Less commonly, the treated area darkens instead. This is the single most important trade-off to understand before treating a cosmetic lesion on visible skin, and it is why we may recommend a different method entirely for a facial lesion on darker skin, or advise leaving a harmless lesion alone. Where a lesion is medically necessary to treat, the priority changes and we will explain the balance clearly.

What to Expect During Treatment

1. Assessment — examination of the lesion, confirmation of the diagnosis, review of your medical history, medications and how your skin scars and pigments.
2. Consent — an explanation of the method, likely number of sessions, expected healing and the pigment risk described above.
3. Treatment — liquid nitrogen is applied for a few seconds per cycle. You will feel intense cold, then a stinging or burning sensation. Anaesthetic is not normally needed. Most single lesions take under five minutes.
4. Immediately after — the area turns white, then becomes red and swollen within an hour or two. A blister may form later the same day, which is a normal part of the process.
5. Healing — the blister dries into a scab, which separates over roughly one to three weeks. Hands and feet heal more slowly than the face.
6. Review — repeat sessions are scheduled where needed, commonly for warts and verrucae.

Aftercare

Keep the area clean and dry, and wash gently with soap and water once healing begins. Do not pick or burst a blister — if one becomes painful or is in an awkward spot, contact the clinic rather than draining it yourself. Let scabs separate naturally rather than lifting them off. Protect the healing site from the sun for several months, since UV exposure on new skin is what drives lasting pigment change. Simple pain relief is usually sufficient for the aching that some patients notice for a day or two. How Many Sessions Will I Need?

It depends entirely on the lesion. Skin tags and seborrhoeic keratoses often clear in a single session. Actinic keratoses may need one or two. Viral warts and verrucae are the most stubborn, commonly requiring three to six sessions spaced two to four weeks apart, and plantar warts on the sole can take longer still. Warts are caused by a virus, so clearance also depends on your immune response — which is why no honest clinic can promise a fixed number in advance. You will feel intense cold followed by stinging or burning for the few seconds of treatment and briefly afterwards. Most patients describe it as sharp but very short. Anaesthetic is not usually required, and mild aching for a day or two afterwards is normal.

Will cryotherapy leave a mark?

Often the skin recovers with no visible trace, but a pale patch at the treated site is a recognised outcome, particularly on medium and darker skin tones, and it can occasionally be permanent. How long does healing take?

Usually one to three weeks for the scab to separate. Facial skin heals fastest; hands, and especially the soles of the feet, take longer.

Can I shower or swim afterwards?

Showering is fine from the outset — keep the area clean and dry it gently. Avoid swimming pools, the sea and saunas until the site has fully healed and any scab has separated.
