Dermapen and mesotherapy in Dubai are often mentioned together, and for good reason, because they address different halves of the same problem. Microneedling with a Dermapen works on skin structure — scarring, texture and firmness. Mesotherapy, meanwhile, delivers hydrating and antioxidant ingredients into the skin to improve quality and glow. At Dermabloom Medical Center in Mirdif, Dr Sarah Magdy assesses your skin first, then advises whether one, both or neither is appropriate. Dermapen Microneedling: How It Works
A Dermapen is an automated microneedling device with fine, sterile needles that move vertically at speed. As it passes over the skin, it creates thousands of controlled micro-channels. Consequently, the skin responds as it would to any small injury, by producing new collagen and elastin during healing. This process is often called collagen induction therapy.
Importantly, the depth is adjustable. Shallow settings suit fine lines and general skin quality, whereas deeper settings are used for established acne scarring. Because the needles move vertically rather than dragging, an automated pen is more precise and more comfortable than older rolling devices.
What Microneedling Treats Well
- Acne scarring — particularly rolling and boxcar scars, where the evidence is strongest.
- Uneven texture — roughness and irregular surface quality.
- Enlarged pores — appearance can improve as surrounding collagen builds.
- Fine lines — early lines and general crepiness.
- Stretch marks — on the body, though these need patience and realistic expectations.
- Overall skin firmness — a gradual improvement rather than a dramatic one.
A Realistic Word on Acne Scars
We would rather set expectations properly than sell you a course. Microneedling improves acne scarring; it does not erase it. Typically patients see meaningful improvement over a course of three to six sessions, spaced about four weeks apart, with collagen continuing to remodel for months afterwards. However, deep ice-pick scars respond poorly to needling alone and often need a different or combined approach. Therefore, we will tell you at assessment what is realistically achievable for your particular scarring.
Mesotherapy: What It Is, Honestly
Mesotherapy involves a series of very superficial microinjections that place ingredients — typically hyaluronic acid, vitamins, amino acids and antioxidants — directly into the upper layers of the skin. The reasoning is straightforward: placing hydrating ingredients where they are needed achieves more than applying them to the surface.
Here we want to be measured rather than promotional. Hyaluronic acid skin boosters have reasonable supporting evidence for improving skin hydration and quality. By contrast, the evidence for elaborate vitamin cocktails is considerably weaker and more variable between studies. So we position mesotherapy as a skin-quality and hydration treatment, not as a structural or anti-ageing solution. Patients who understand that tend to be very happy with it. Patients promised a transformation are not.
What Mesotherapy Suits
- Dull, dehydrated skin — extremely common given Dubai’s air conditioning and climate.
- Loss of glow — skin that looks tired despite a good routine.
- Fine crepey texture — especially around the eyes, neck and hands.
- Pre-event skin preparation — as part of a course planned well in advance.
Hair Mesotherapy
Mesotherapy is also used on the scalp for hair thinning, delivering vitamins and other ingredients into the scalp skin. Results vary considerably, though, and the evidence is less robust than for established medical hair loss treatments. Above all, hair loss has causes — hormonal, nutritional, thyroid, iron, stress and genetic among them — and treating the scalp without identifying the cause is guesswork. Consequently, we recommend a proper assessment first. A dermatology consultation is the correct starting point, and blood work is often part of it.
Combining the Two
The treatments work well together, which is why they are frequently offered as a pair. Microneedling opens temporary micro-channels, and mesotherapy ingredients applied during the same session reach the skin more effectively as a result. In practice, this combination suits patients wanting both structural improvement and better skin quality. Nevertheless, combining is not automatically better. If your only concern is dehydration, needling adds downtime for no additional benefit, and we will say so.
What Happens During Treatment
- Assessment — your concerns, medical history, medications, scarring tendency and any recent treatments are reviewed, then a plan is agreed.
- Numbing — topical anaesthetic is applied and left for about 30 minutes before microneedling.
- Preparation — the skin is cleansed and disinfected thoroughly.
- Treatment — the device is passed methodically across the treatment area at the chosen depth, or the mesotherapy injections are placed.
- Post-treatment — a calming serum and, where appropriate, LED therapy help settle the skin.
- Finish — SPF is applied and aftercare instructions are given.
Allow roughly 60 to 75 minutes in total, including numbing time.
Downtime and Aftercare
Unlike our facials, these treatments do involve downtime, so plan around them. After microneedling, expect redness resembling moderate sunburn for 24 to 48 hours, along with some tightness and mild swelling. Light flaking can follow over the next few days. After mesotherapy, small bumps and occasional pinpoint bruising are normal, and these usually settle within one to three days.
For aftercare, avoid makeup for 24 hours after microneedling. Similarly, skip the gym, sauna, steam room and swimming for 48 hours, since sweat on freshly needled skin risks irritation and infection. Pause retinoids, acids and vitamin C for around five days. Finally, sun protection is non-negotiable — treated skin pigments readily under Dubai’s UV levels, and neglecting SPF is the fastest way to turn a good treatment into a pigmentation problem.
Suitability and Skin Tone
Microneedling is generally a safer option for medium and darker skin tones than ablative laser resurfacing, because it does not remove the surface layer. That said, post-inflammatory pigmentation remains a genuine risk, so we work conservatively and insist on diligent sun protection afterwards.
Neither treatment is suitable during an active skin infection or an inflammatory acne flare in the treatment area. Equally, a history of keloid scarring, certain bleeding disorders and some medications need discussion first. If you have taken oral isotretinoin recently, tell us, as timing matters. Pregnancy and breastfeeding should also be declared, since some ingredients are avoided.
Pricing
Both treatments are usually recommended as a course rather than a single session, so ask about the total cost of a course instead of one appointment. Pricing depends on the treatment area, the depth and the number of sessions. We confirm all costs at consultation before anything is booked. Please call 04 268 8226. As cosmetic treatments, these are not covered by insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is microneedling painful?
Topical anaesthetic is applied for about 30 minutes beforehand, so most patients tolerate it well. You will feel vibration and some scratching, particularly over bony areas such as the forehead and jawline. Deeper settings for scarring are more uncomfortable than shallow ones, understandably.
How many sessions will I need?
Three to six sessions spaced roughly four weeks apart is typical for acne scarring or texture. Meanwhile, mesotherapy is usually given as an initial course followed by maintenance. Your specific plan is set at assessment.
When will I see results?
Skin often looks better within a week or two, but the real change is gradual. Because collagen remodels over months, improvement continues for up to six months after a completed course. Patience genuinely pays here.
How much downtime is there?
After microneedling, expect redness like moderate sunburn for 24 to 48 hours, sometimes with light flaking afterwards. After mesotherapy, small bumps and occasional pinpoint bruises settle within one to three days. Plan events accordingly.
Will microneedling remove my acne scars completely?
No, and anyone promising that is overselling. It improves the appearance of scarring, often substantially, particularly rolling and boxcar scars. However, deep ice-pick scars respond poorly to needling alone. We will be specific about what your scarring is likely to achieve.
Is it safe for brown and darker skin tones?
Generally yes, and it is often preferred over ablative laser for deeper skin tones since the surface is not removed. Nevertheless, post-inflammatory pigmentation remains possible, so we treat conservatively and require strict sun protection afterwards.
Does mesotherapy actually work?
Hyaluronic acid skin boosters have reasonable evidence for improving hydration and skin quality. By contrast, the evidence for elaborate vitamin cocktails is weaker and more variable. So we recommend it for glow and hydration rather than for structural change, and we would rather tell you that than overstate it.
Can I have these treatments before a wedding or event?
Yes, provided you plan properly. Finish a course at least two to four weeks before the day, and never book a first session close to an event. Since results build gradually, starting a few months ahead gives much better outcomes.
Can I combine microneedling with other treatments?
Often yes, though sequencing and spacing matter. Peels, laser and injectables each need appropriate intervals around needling. We will map out a sensible order rather than compressing everything together.
Who should avoid these treatments?
Anyone with an active skin infection or inflammatory acne in the treatment area should wait. Additionally, a history of keloid scarring, certain bleeding disorders, recent oral isotretinoin, pregnancy and breastfeeding all need discussing first. Full disclosure at assessment keeps treatment safe.
What are your opening hours?
We are open from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Please book ahead on 04 268 8226, since these appointments need scheduling with numbing time included.
This page provides general information only and is not medical advice. Suitability for microneedling or mesotherapy is determined at an in-clinic assessment. Both treatments carry risks including redness, swelling, bruising, infection and pigment change, and results vary between individuals. No outcome can be guaranteed. Treatment is not performed on skin with an active infection or inflammatory flare in the treatment area.
