What Each Component Contributes

Note the second row of that table carefully: the hyaluronic acid used here is non-crosslinked, skin-booster grade. It is not volumising filler. It hydrates within the skin and does not add contour or structure, so if hollowing is your concern, this is not the treatment for it.

Why Combining Them Makes Sense

There are two arguments for the pairing, and both are reasonable rather than revolutionary. First, the two effects arrive at different times, so the hyaluronic acid covers the waiting period while the PRP does its slower work. Patients appreciate seeing something happen in the first week rather than being asked to wait three months on faith.

Second, the hyaluronic acid acts as a carrier. Because it is a gel, it holds the platelet-rich plasma in place at the injection site rather than allowing it to disperse quickly, which is thought to prolong local exposure to the growth factors.

That said, we should be precise about the evidence. The rationale is sound and the combination is widely used, but robust evidence that PRP with HA outperforms PRP alone for facial skin is limited. So we present it as a reasonable option with a plausible mechanism, not as a proven upgrade. If you would rather not pay for a plausible mechanism, PRP alone remains a perfectly sensible choice.

How the Combination Is Delivered

Method matters here, more than patients realise, and there are two approaches in use across the market.

Some clinics use a dedicated closed-system tube that separates the platelet-rich plasma and combines it with hyaluronic acid inside the device itself, so the two never meet open air. Others prepare PRP conventionally and then inject hyaluronic acid separately, or mix the two at the point of use. The closed-system approach is the more defensible on sterility grounds, since every additional open transfer is an additional opportunity for contamination.

The Appointment

1. Assessment — your concerns, medical history, medications, allergies and blood-related conditions reviewed, and suitability confirmed.
2. Blood draw — a small sample taken from your arm, as for a routine blood test.
3. Preparation — the sample is centrifuged and the platelet-rich fraction combined with hyaluronic acid under sterile conditions.
4. Injection — the preparation is placed into the skin as micro-droplets across the planned zones, after topical anaesthetic where appropriate.
5. Finish — calming product, SPF and written aftercare.

Who the Combination Suits

Conversely, it is not the right choice where volume loss, sagging or expression lines are the concern, since none of those respond to hydration or growth factors. Filler, tightening and botulinum toxin address those respectively, and we will say so rather than sell a course that cannot deliver.

Is the Upgrade Worth It?

We get asked this directly, so here is a direct answer. If your main frustration is that your skin looks dull and dehydrated and you want to see something happen quickly, the hyaluronic acid component earns its place. If your goal is longer-term skin quality and you are content to wait for gradual change, PRP alone will likely give you most of the benefit for less money.

Alternatively, if hydration is the entire concern and you have no particular preference for autologous treatment, a straightforward hyaluronic acid skin booster may be the most economical route of the three. Three reasonable options, and the right one depends on what is actually bothering you.

Downtime and Aftercare

Expect small bumps at the injection points, which settle within a few hours to a day, and mild swelling that is most noticeable the morning after. Bruising is possible, particularly around the eyes and on the neck, and can take three to five days to fade.

For aftercare, leave makeup off for the remainder of the treatment day. Additionally, avoid the gym, sauna, steam room and swimming for 48 hours, and pause retinoids and acids for around five days. Please avoid anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen for a few days either side where you safely can, since they act on the platelet activity the PRP component relies on. Sunscreen daily, without exception.

Sessions and Maintenance

Three sessions spaced about four weeks apart is the usual course, followed by maintenance every six to twelve months. The hydration effect is noticeable early in the course, while the PRP contribution accumulates, so the fullest result is generally seen three to four months after the final session.

For events, complete the course at least three to four weeks ahead, and avoid a first session in the fortnight before the date given the bruising risk.

Suitability

Because this treatment includes PRP, blood-related conditions matter. It is avoided where there is a platelet disorder or low platelet count, active infection at the site, and during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and anaemia should be corrected first. Allergy to hyaluronic acid preparations must also be declared, since that component is manufactured rather than autologous.

Anticoagulant therapy, blood-borne infection, active or recent malignancy, autoimmune disease, immunosuppression, keloid tendency and recent systemic isotretinoin all require discussion beforehand.
